Strike Without Fear

Artist/Entertainer: SkyBlew

Written By Rob Lee

“One of Transpires good friends and supporters in Carolina (Lady Rage) spoke to me several times about a young man who she described as unique and talented. Obviously, our team is always open to tell stories about positive people making a difference in the communities. Although we may not have the opportunity to tell everyone’s story, it is truly an honor whenever we are able to make it happen. SkyBlew is a young man who has seen a lot of tragedy and heart ache, but never gave up on himself or the inherent good in others. He is a great example of our motto: Dare 2be Bold”.

SkyBlew Interview:

Tsp: Tell us a little about who you are and where you are from?

SkyBlew: Well, first my name is Mario Farrow but I’m known as SkyBlew for some strange reason, (laughter). I don’t rap, I Paint The Sky,Blew! I happen to be a “colorful dreamer”, and the coolest nerd you ever heard, (laughter). I’m just a down to earth kid who loves life, music (good music to be exact), video games & anime. I’m from Auburn, Alabama but I have been residing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for 5 years now. I rep both Cities & States, (laughter).

Close My Eyes

Tsp: Tell our readers about your start and history in the entertainment industry?

SkyBlew: My start in the entertainment industry you ask? Well, I started by writing poems when I was younger, then as I got older I tried my hand at music. I played the drums for my grandma’s church, so yeah rhythm was always in me. I had a rough life, from being in foster care, my grandmother dying and much more than I will discuss in this interview because I wouldn’t want you guys to feel bad for me, (laughter). The only outlet/scapegoat I had was music so I would write my feelings and stories into raps. A liberation of sorts you could say! I always loved good music. My step dad would play Nas, 2Pac, Eminem, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest & more. I didn’t realize what was happening when I was younger but when I got older I was like “whoa I grew up on some dope stuff” (laughs) and that’s only the hip hop portion. My family members also played a lot of soul and jazz.

When I turned fifteen I was still in Alabama, so my taste in music had to be altered a little bit. You know the south didn’t really rock with that type of music too much. So when I used to rap back then I went by the moniker “Young Millionaire” lol yeah I know, Cliché as heck. I realized that wasn’t the real me. I was around a lot of bad people and made a lot of bad decisions but I always had a different mindset than most so I knew what I was doing wasn’t me.

My grandma’s death resulted in me changing and becoming who I really am “SkyBlew”! Her teaching me about life and being supportive is the driving passion in this music business for me because I’m like “what would my grandma think about this song?  She would want me to try to make an impact on someone’s life. So that’s what I do now!

I started making music as SkyBlew with close friends Kdotmills & ACee. Countless long nights of beats and rhymes and laughs is what music is all about. Of course it took years and a lot of work to finally get to where I am now (though I have so much further to go) I definitely came a long way. A few years ago I also formed a 2Man group by the name of “Blaze The Sky” with fellow North Carolina emcee & good friend by the name of “Azon Blaze”. We truly have fun making good music thats reminiscent of 90′s hip hop and we are demolishing stages everywhere! (laughs). That’s the bro! It’s truly a blessing to shave shared the stage with major acts such as: Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, Flobots, Slum Village, Grieves, Jedi Mind Tricks & much more! I was even nominated for the NCUMAS (North Carolina Underground Music Awards) 2012 Lyricist Award. I’m now signed with a great independent label (Star Performance Media) who genuinely loves me as a person and respects my vision, and not only respect the vision, but has the same vision as well. That’s a rarity! I look at those things as blessings because that’s what they are. Like I said before, I still have a long way to go.

Tsp: What are some of your goals and aspirations both in and outside of the industry?

SkyBlew: Some of my goals & aspirations? Honestly, I could care less about fame. I just want to leave a mark on the world that the devil can’t erase. I want to shine light through the darkness! There’s definitely a war going on for our souls right now and I want to be on the front line in this war against the darkness. Music is a big part of it, because music is the biggest tool to our subconscious and spirit. So these fools are out here idolizing money, fame, sex, satan and a ton of other ignorance in their music and pumping it into our brains & souls. It seems like no one is trying to be that positive voice in the world except my hero (Lupe Fiasco). So that’s why I’m here, to “Paint The Sky Blew”! When you’re going through something and you need someone to help you get through it, I want them to be able to play my music that  makes a difference and puts a smile on their faces. Someone is on the verge of suicide, but they think of some of my lyrics or put their headphones on and play one of my songs and it saves their life! Literally, that’s what my goal is. Who else is supposed to help them, some ignorant rapper on the radio? Not likely! Someone has to be a hero to these kids. These are some of my goals. I intend to lead this revolution. “When your skies are looking grey, call on me so I can paint them BLEW….

Tsp: Do you intend to do anything different than the norm in the industry, and if so in what ways?

SkyBlew: Yes I plan to do a lot different than most in the industry & you know what that is? Be myself! I’m not going to put on a front for no one or for money. Too many people are afraid of what people will think of them if they do certain things. I will always be myself; if I wanna do a song about anime I’m going to do it. If I want to make a song about my favorite video game, I’m doing it. If I want to make a positive song to uplift someone’s spirit, I’m doing that too. There’s enough lies being relayed in this industry, someone needs to bring the truth and that’s what I’m going to do at all times. If doing that puts me in harm’s way, I don’t care. God has me under his protection. I will make the music I love, not the music the world loves to hear, you know? It’s all about perception, so you got to have something to say, or don’t say nothing at all! That’s what I plan to do.

Tsp: Would you like to mention some of your past collaborations, and is there anyone in particular that you would really like to work with?

SkyBlew: Past collaborations? Yea, I have been blessed enough to work with some very talented and well known people such as: K. Sparks, Kaimbr, Random (Mega Ran), Tab-One (Of Kooley High), Poet Dasan Ahanu, Skaz Digga (Big Daddy Kane’s DJ), Small Eyez & countless others! Not to mention the producers I have worked with such as: L’ Orange, DJ Qvali, Focus, Backdraft, MTV Producer Atlantic Connection, D.R.U.G.S, The Cratez, U’Nique Music, Asonhi, DNA Productions, Haley Hall, SublimeCloud & a ton of others! Def a blessing without a doubt! Far as artists/producers I want to work with in the future, some of them unfortunately passed away (God bless their souls) but it’s still a dream of mines so I will mention them as well. The list goes: Lupe Fiasco, Common, Scapegoat Wax, Amy Winehouse (RIP), Nujabes (RIP), JDilla(RIP), Blue Scholars, Common Market, Lauryn Hill & theres definitely more, but those are the people I really want to work with.

Tsp: Any Closing statements or remarks:

SkyBlew: Thank you for taking time out to chat it up with a nerd such as myself, LoL I appreciate the love. I just wanted to let everyone know that my independent label debuy album is coming out the last week in June (Window Seat On That Midnight Train), via Star Performance Media, so be looking out for that on Itunes and other places. Shout out to my crew/family 2StepsAboveTheStars!!! & My Crew Crew (No9to5 family). Shouts to Transpire Magazine for giving artists a chance to get some good exposure. It’s hard to find that type of support in the industry (media) now without them asking for $$$, you know? Ok I’m done talking your heads off, lol stay safe/blessed everyone and never let someone tell you to give up on your dream or its frivolous. Keep aiming for the stars….

-Paint The Sky,Blew!!!
